Suzuki Loom Works

Yes, you read that right. Michio Suzuki, the founder of the company that makes today’s fast and powerful bikes, actually created his enterprise to produce weaving machines and looms for the clothing and textile industries. Suzuki Loom Works was founded in the Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan in 1909 and produced looms for almost thirty years. It’s hard to imagine this now!
 

Adding More Products

Prior to World War II, the Suzuki company’s leaders decided that product diversification was the way to go, so they started to manufacture car prototypes in 1937 with liquid-cooled, four-stroke engines that were surprisingly powerful and impressive. 

The war delayed production and further developments for several years, but in 1952, Suzuki released their first motorcycle, the Power Free, which had a 36 cc engine. By 1956, Suzuki was manufacturing thousands of motorcycles a year, in addition to their lineup of automobiles for the Japanese and international markets. Ever since then, they’ve only added to their catalog of products, and they’ve continued to produce truly impressive motorcycles, cars, and other vehicles for riders of all stripes.
 

Competitive Spirit

Suzuki’s motorcycles became especially popular in the global motorcycle racing community. Rider Ernst Degner claimed a motorcycle racing world championship grand prix victory for Suzuki in 1962, riding a 50cc Suzuki motorcycle. He then helped to design more of the company’s bikes while claiming more titles. Other famous riders include Hugh Anderson, who rode Suzuki bikes to become a double world champion in 1963, and Joel Robert, who achieved a motocross victory on a 250cc Suzuki motorcycle.
